Kate Maehr, CEO of the Greater Chicago Food Depository, has been chosen to address graduates and receive an honorary degree at the Driehaus College of Business Commencement June 14.
Undergraduate and graduate business students from DePaul University’s Class of 2015 will receive their diplomas at the ceremony, which begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Allstate Arena, 6920 N. Mannheim Road, Rosemont, Ill.
As the leader of one of the nation’s largest food banks, Maehr is known as a tireless advocate for the Chicago area’s neediest men, women and children. Since becoming CEO of the Greater Chicago Food Depository in 2006, she has boosted the nonprofit’s fundraising efforts and improved operations to increase the distribution of food, while galvanizing statewide anti-hunger policy efforts.
Under Maehr’s guidance, the Greater Chicago Food Depository has increased the annual distribution of food by 65 percent to 66 million pounds of nutritious food, which helps to ease the hunger of more than 812,100 people each year. Maehr has been instrumental in developing programs, such as food-service job training, that seek to break the cycle of poverty. She also is co-chair of the Illinois Commission to End Hunger and is a board member of Feeding Illinois.
